Pretzels were first produced in a monastery in Italy. One of the monks, not wanting to waste any leftover dough, twisted the thin strips of dough into a shape resembling a person in prayer. He then gave them out as rewards to those children who correctly learned their prayers. The popularity of pretzels expanded throughout Europe and when the early European pilgrims travelled to America to start a new life, they took their pretzel recipes with them. Many of these pilgrims settled in Pennsylvania, where a few years later, the first pretzel bakery was opened. Pretzels are now popular all over the States of America but remain a firm favourite in the state of Pennsylvania, where approximately 12 times as many pretzels are eaten! In 1996, Intersnack (now Intersnack Ltd) became the first company to produce pretzels in the UK. The popularity of Pretzels in the UK is steady growing as more and more stores stock our delicious products. Click here to see where you can buy and try pretzels. |
